During the meeting, data was also shared on nut plantations in Spain. Thus, the area under organic cultivation was analysed, which represents a third of the total planted, 82% of which corresponds to almond trees and 12.3% to pistachio. Furthermore, it was observed that 33% of almond trees were grown organically and 31% were irrigated. Organic cultivation has a very significant production potential, because 22% of the planted area has not yet reached full production (21% in the case of organic dry farming and 30.5% in the case of irrigated farming).
Elena Busutil pointed out the importance of having information that allows producers to know what they have planted in order to better guide business decisions. She also encouraged the sector to work towards differentiation in production. As of 1 January 2025, it will be compulsory to show the country of origin on labelling, which offers a unique opportunity to differentiate our produce and work on its valorisation, he concluded.
