The hydrological year is coming to an end with ‘exceptional’ contributions for the Community’s irrigators, especially in the northern half where the rains have left a great campaign that allows winter sowing to be tackled with guarantees. According to the latest data from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) in Aragon, the summer has been very wet with a percentage of rainfall of 124% compared to normal in the reference period (1991-2020). Thus, the hydrological year ends with 52% more water reserves than at this time last year.

The rains are thus being felt in Aragon’s reservoirs. According to the latest update from the Ebro River Basin Authority (CHE), the reservoirs are at 59% of their capacity, while on the right bank they are at 36%. Of particular note is Barasona, at 95% of its capacity, and San Salvador with 62%.

And these figures are also being passed on to the irrigators. From Bardenas, the president of the irrigation community, José María Vinué, points out that it is possible that they will delay the closure of the canal ‘until 20 October’, when on other occasions they have done so ‘before Pilar’. Vinué explains that the average contributions ‘have been above normal’. ‘It’s an exceptional season after almost three years’, he adds.
